REBELS RULE BURNSIDE?? During the off-season Burnside AFC had its biggest victory in over 10 years when it successfully appealed the result of the MPL play-off series. As you all know Burnside won its appeal to NZ Football and Rangers appeal to CAS of that decision was dismissed. What you may not know is that Rangers also filed another appeal with NZ Football and Burnside won again. Burnside as now met one of its long term aims of regaining its place in the top Mainland league.
Once again though Burnside AFC had to rely solely on the services of its most successful team of all time – that team is “the rebels”. The appeal was totally reliant on several current and former rebels and no doubt would not have succeeded without the famous “rebel factor”. The appeal team comprised Craig “the godfather” Rhodes (over 400 matches for the rebels), Greg “I don’t need a barber” Steel (over 300 matches for the rebels) and Phil “the investigator” Ayers (1 match for the rebels) who carried out this work voluntarily for the betterment of the club and to ensure that justice was both done and seen to be done. Later Glenn “I can’t wait for my call-up” Jones (but Glenn also plays golf with Rhodes so is a member by symbiosis). No stone was left unturned (and all jugs were emptied) in this process.
The result speaks for itself.
It goes without saying that the entire club of over 1,200 members owes a huge debt (again) to the rebels. The rebels were formed in 1986 and are obviously leaders in many areas at the club (apart from being Burnside’s most successful team of all time) including:-
- the most club sponsors of any team
- the most racehorse owners of any team
- the only team to have an honours board
- the most former Canterbury United trainers of any team
- give more time voluntarily to the club than any other team
It is difficult to become a rebel but when you do you are a rebel for life.
